AEO vs GEO: what is the difference?

Two acronyms, a lot of overlap, and a simple way to decide what to actually work on.

If you have spent any time reading about AI and search lately, you have run into two acronyms that sound like rivals: AEO and GEO. They are not really rivals. They describe two overlapping views of the same shift, which is that people increasingly get answers from machines that write a response instead of handing back a list of links. Here is what each one means, where they differ, and how to decide where to put your effort.

What AEO means

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the older and broader term. An "answer engine" is anything that tries to give you the single best answer rather than ten links: a featured snippet at the top of Google, a voice assistant reading one result aloud, a "People also ask" box, and now the AI answer boxes that sit above search results. AEO is about structuring your content so a machine can lift a clean, direct answer straight from your page.

In practice, AEO rewards content that states things plainly: clear questions and answers, definitions, short lists, comparison tables, and specifics. If your page buries the answer in three paragraphs of throat-clearing, an answer engine will pick a competitor who got to the point.

What GEO means

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the newer term, and it narrows the focus to generative AI assistants specifically: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and the rest. The goal of GEO is to be named, cited and recommended inside the paragraph the model writes. When someone asks an assistant "what is the best tool for X", GEO is how you become one of the options it mentions.

GEO leans on a few things beyond clean formatting: a clear brand entity the model can recognize, claims that are corroborated across multiple credible sources so the model feels safe repeating them, and content that is retrievable and up to date.

Where they overlap (which is most of it)

Here is the honest part that the acronyms obscure: AEO and GEO share roughly 80 percent of the same work. Both reward content that is clear, well-structured, credible and easy for a machine to parse. Both punish vague, padded, hard-to-verify content. If you optimize well for one, you are most of the way to the other. Many practitioners use the two terms interchangeably, and that is not a mistake so much as a reflection of how much they overlap.

Where they actually differ

  • Surface. AEO includes classic answer features (snippets, voice, PAA) as well as AI boxes. GEO is specifically about generative assistants.
  • Unit of success. AEO often wants you to be the answer (the quoted passage). GEO often wants you to be mentioned within the answer (a recommended option among several).
  • Levers. AEO leans a little more on on-page structure and schema. GEO leans a little more on entity clarity and off-site corroboration, because the model is synthesizing from many sources.

So which should you focus on?

Neither, exactly. Focus on the shared fundamentals, because they feed both:

  1. Answer the specific questions your buyers ask, directly and early on the page.
  2. Make your brand entity unambiguous: a clear about page, consistent descriptions, and structured data.
  3. Earn mentions and citations elsewhere so your claims are corroborated across the web.
  4. Keep content current and author-attributed so engines treat it as trustworthy.
  5. Measure where you appear, then do more of what gets cited.

The only real decision is which engines matter for your audience, and you answer that by measuring, not guessing. If your buyers live in Perplexity and ChatGPT, prioritize those. If they rely on Google's AI Overviews, prioritize that. Start by reading what GEO is and how engines choose what to cite, then set up measurement with our guide to tracking your AI visibility.

The tools that help

You can do the measurement by hand, but it gets tedious fast across many prompts and several engines. That is what the category of AI-visibility tools exists for. See our ranked list of the best AI-visibility tools, or the free options if you just want to get started.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the older, broader term for being the direct answer in answer engines. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses specifically on being named and cited inside generative AI answers like ChatGPT and Perplexity. In practice, most of the work is the same.

Should I focus on AEO or GEO?

Focus on the fundamentals that serve both: clear, well-structured content that answers real questions, a credible and consistent brand entity, and corroboration from other trusted sources. Then measure where you appear and double down on the engines that matter to your buyers.

Do AEO and GEO replace SEO?

No. Both build on SEO fundamentals. If search engines cannot crawl, understand and trust your content, AI engines will struggle to cite it too. Treat AEO and GEO as a layer on top of good SEO, not a replacement for it.
